MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile Police Department said they are investigating a woman for animal cruelty after 42 cats and one dog were found in a one-bedroom apartment occupied by the woman and her 5-year-old child.

Cpl. Christopher Levy with the Mobile Police Department said the situation is being investigated because of reportedly bad smells, and that none of the animals are dead.

It happened at the Country Club Woods apartment complex in Mobile. Neighbors who live in the same building said the smell was so bad, it crept into their apartment.

“Through my bathroom you can smell like an odor. It smells even though I use bleach, Pine-Sol. It smells like a urine reeking odor,” said one woman.

Natalie Burke lives in the complex. She said it's unsanitary and she is appalled at the though of that many animals in a one-bedroom apartment.

“Forty-two cats, that don’t make sense,” said Burke.

Authorities also say DHR is on scene to investigate the possible unsanitary living conditions of the child. An officer on the scene said DHR took the child.
