MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile police said an investigation is underway after authorities said 25 Kindle Fire tablets were taken from B.C. Rain High school.
Police said a group of students, all of whom have been identified, stole the tablets on Friday, January 11.
Investigators said they contacted those students and told them to return the electronics immediately.
As of Wednesday, January 16, police said 11 of the tablets had been returned to school officials and a few more were returned Thursday morning.
Investigators said some of the students were acting out of “desperation.” One of them, authorities confirmed, planned to exchange the tablet for a pair of pants.
Police said most of the crimes are misdemeanors and said it is up to the school to decide whether to press charges.
Authorities, however, said they are still working to recover the additional tablets and see if any of the students will be charged with a felony. For that to happen, authorities said a student would have to have taken more than $500 in property.
