MPD: He's obviously a violent criminal

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A man arrested over the weekend has a lengthy criminal past and was already out on bond for attempted murder.

Mobile police said David Cox was arrested Sunday after he was taken to Providence Hospital for treatment of an unknown injury.

“He had been taken there by ambulance upon arrival he became disorderly with doctors and nurses, which is why they called Mobile Police,” said Ashley Rains.

Officers restrained Cox, but he fought with them, too.

“After he was handcuffed he was able to move his handcuffs to the front, officers then had to remove him from their vehicle in order to handcuff him properly back behind his back. He became combative with the officer while being re-handcuffed and actually had to be touch-stunned,” said Rains.

David Cox was already out on bond for attempted murder and due to be arraigned February 20 for that charge.

“He was driving a truck when he actually struck a man on Rotterdam and Wexford, and after actually dragging that victim under his truck for about two blocks the victim was actually dislodged from the truck and Mr. Cox left the scene before officers arrived,” said Corporal Christopher Levy, spokesperson for the Mobile Police Department, on January 13, 2012.

The victim in that case, known as Shorty by friends, survived the ordeal and his friends say he is getting around and doing better.

Police arrested David Cox for that crime on January 13, 2012, on Sunday, one year later he was back behind bars.

“Mr. Cox is no stranger to Mobile Police Department. He is obviously a violent criminal, and we would like to see him taken off the street,” said Rains.

Cox was charged Sunday with failure to obey a police officer and disorderly conduct.

His bond was about $800, and he's now a free man.

“It can be frustrating when our officers are spending time repetitively arresting people that are violent criminals or that take part in criminal activity,” said Rains.

We were told that Cox was eligible to post bond because the charges against him now are misdemeanors.

Misdemeanor bond rates are pre-set by the state legislator.
