MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - An internal investigation involving Sgt. Leland Terrell is complete, and now the case is going to be heard by an internal trial board.
"It has been alleged that Sgt. Terrell displayed a weapon while inside the establishment, one of the parties who was inside complained to internal affairs," said Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams.
Williams said Terrell was off-duty at the time.
"There was some other civilians and officers who were there as part of this investigation we've taken statements and testimony from each of those officers and civilians who witnessed the incident and that will also be a part of the trial board hearing," said Williams.
There is an allegation that Terrell was intoxicated.
"As part of the investigation it was alleged or said that the parties had been out drinking, that may be part of why the incident occurred," Williams said.
Williams said he does have some video of the incident but it was grainy and didn't show much. Terrell has been in the news before, but for other reasons. You're looking at video from 2001 , where Terrell received the Alabama Attorney General's top award for law enforcement. He earned that award for an incident where he was almost killed in a gun battle with a drug dealer. Back then his mother talked about her son leaving law enforcement after the shooting.
"He would never be happy that way he's always said he wanted to be out there on the streets making a difference,"
Williams said the trial board is set to hear the case near the end of the month. Terrell is still on duty until those recommendations and a decision by the chief is made.
