MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own tonight, a well know figure on horseback.

Lt. Tommy Menton died Monday.

Menton's father, former Mobile County Commissioner Bill Menton, died two years ago.

Funeral arrangements for Lt. Menton will be handled by Radney Funeral Home. Arrangements are not yet complete.

Eddie Menton, Lt. Menton's brother, released a family statement early Tuesday morning.

"On behalf of the Menton family, let me thank each of you from the depths of our hearts for the kind words of expression and the deep feelings of affection that you have shown during this very grave time of uncertainty, pain, confusion and deep grief.

Tommy was a kind and loving person to all he encountered. He was extremely passionate about being a police officer and doing the finest job he could for the people he served.

He always looked for a way to make things better for his city, the people he was responsible for and for his superiors.

That his incredible sense of humor has been silenced is of intense pain to all of his family, friends and colleagues.

No one could ask for a better brother, brother-in-law or uncle than Tommy. He was fiercely loyal, incredibly kind and forever helpful.

Mobile has been remarkably kind and loving each time the Menton family has been faced with tragedy and sadness. For that, we thank you all and graciously return the love to you."
