MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - According to authorities, the man behind a recent crime spree in Mobile has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Washington County, Florida.

Mobile Police said 46-year-old Parris Smith robbed an elderly woman at gunpoint Friday, February 8. Then they said he stole her 2005 Honda Accord.

"Something like this does not happen in this neighborhood. I'm just totally shocked and horrified," said Tracy Sherota, a friend of the victim and neighbor of the victim.

Sherot, who was headed home from work, spoke to FOX10 News at the scene.

"[She's] just a really sweet lady," Sherota said.

Sherota said it offends her that someone would target the elderly.

"Just the fact that anybody would do this in our neighborhood here in broad daylight," Sherota said.  "It's just sad. It's very sad."

Police said Smith broke into the elderly victim's home through a window.

She said she returned home just after 2 p.m. The victim said she noticed “something was off” when she entered her house. She said Smith entered the kitchen where he robbed her at gunpoint and fled.

Police said Smith is also wanted in connection the BankTrust robbery that happened Tuesday on Dauphin Street.

Sherota said one midtown community now knows criminals can strike anywhere at any time. She said vigilance is the key.

"Be on the lookout, everybody. We do. We do watch out for our neighbors here," Sherota said.
