Murphy High students, teachers and staff were told to stay home Monday, February 25, 2013, due to a threat of severe weather. Mobile County School Superintendent Martha Peek made the call around 5 a.m. Monday.
Mobile County School Spokesperson Nancy Pierce said Murphy High was the only school affected - all other Mobile County Public Schools, including Clark Shaw Magnet School will be open Monday and students and staff are expected to be at school.
You may remember, Murphy High School Campus had to be closed for repairs after the Christmas Day tornado. Students are now in portables at the Clark Shaw Magnet Campus. School officials say the portables are not the problem. The portables are safe. The issue stems from the fact that Murphy students are not allowed to be dropped off at the Clark Shaw campus. They must catch a bus at the old Murphy High Campus - where there is no shelter. Then once at the Clark Shaw campus - there is no shelter between the portables and there are no sidewalks or pavement, leaving the students unprotected from the weather every time they switch classes.
Murphy High students are expected back in class Tuesday, February 26, 2013.
