Murphy students begin clearing lockers

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The hallways of Murphy High School are once again filled with students after the Christmas holiday. Instead of enjoying being back with friends, however, the students are cleaning out their lockers as the transition to their temporary school begins.

"I couldn't believe it. It looks really bad. It didn't look as bad on the news, but I'm here seeing the damage," said senior Brooke Pruitt.

Pruitt and other students had to be escorted to their lockers to clean them out. The hallways were brightened by construction lights. Pruitt said it was hard to comprehend that this was her last day at the school.

"I was looking forward to it; the last semester is always the best. I was looking forward to it, and not portables," Pruitt said.

Cindy Karns teaches juniors and seniors and has been at Murphy for nine years.

"Think for most of them, they've seen the pictures and they had an idea of what they were walking into. But of course, for them this is their last goodbye from where they've spent the last four years," said Murphy teacher Cindy Karns.

Everyone is hoping to get back to some kind of normalcy, and they hope this is one step in that direction.

Murphy students will file into classes, one day at a time next week.

Seniors are the first to step on the Clark-Shaw campus on Monday, Jan. 7. Juniors will start Tuesday, Jan. 8. Sophomores start on Wednesday, Jan. 9 and freshmen on Thursday.

Each class will start its first day with orientation in the Clark-Shaw cafeteria, starting at 8:30 a.m.
