National Weather Service tours damage

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Meteorologists from the National Weather Service toured parts of Mobile Wednesday, Dec. 26 checking on tornado damage.

They said they survey damage after a storm to get a better idea of how powerful storms are.

Jeff Garmon is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the weather office in Mobile.

He said the track of the Christmas Day tornado was close to the track from last week's tornado, although this one was a little further east.

No one expected two tornadoes to hit Mobile in less than a week, but Garmon said tornadoes can hit Alabama in December.

Garmon said crews were following the tracks of the tornado around Mobile, but Thursday would be going to central Alabama where storms hit.

  SECOND RENOVATION FOR CHURCH IN TWO YEARS

The Christmas Day tornado caused heavy roof damage to a Catholic Church on Government Boulevard in Mobile

Work crews were on the scene Wednesday cleaning up at Little Flower Catholic Church.

Rev. John Lynes said the murals inside the church were not damaged, but Mass will be celebrated in the cafeteria for the next few weeks.

Two years ago, the church had to undergo renovations because of a fire.

CANTORE COMES TO TOWN 

One of the people on Dauphin Street preparing reports on the Christmas Day tornado in Mobile was Meteorologist Jim Cantore with The Weather Channel.

He talked with residents and complimented the spirit of people in Mobile in working together to help tornado victims.
