Officer Steven Green remembered for service

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Sunday, February 3 was a somber anniversary for the Mobile Police Department and others as they remembered Officer Steven Green.

Green was killed in the line of duty during what was supposed to be a routine transfer of a robbery suspect from Police Headquarters to Mobile Metro Jail on February 3, 2012.

Just 20 minutes after Officer Green left with suspect Lawrence Wallace, police said Wallace attacked Green in the Sally Port of the jail, stabbing him in the neck and taking off in his patrol car.

One of Officer Green's closest friends continues to work to ensure Green's sacrifice is not forgotten.

Alabama State Representative Napoleon Bracy grew up on the same street as Green. 

Bracy said he misses his friend.

"Steve just was a blessing to so many people. He was a blessing to me growing up. He was kind of like a big brother figure to me growing up. He did a lot of things to keep us out of trouble," Bracy said.

The Alabama Legislature will convene its regular session February 5. Bracy said he was unable to get recognition for Green during last year’s session, because of the timing of the officer’s death. 

Bracy said it's one of his top priorities this year, when the legislature convenes Tuesday.

"We have a Medal of Honor that we offer to an officer from an act that occurred the previous year. We're going to fight real hard for Steve to get that Medal of Honor this year, because he's definitely deserving. This happened in the line of duty. I just hate the way that it happened," he said.

Officer Green was 36-years-old at the time of his death. He was married with three children. Bracy said the current pension system didn't offer much financial support for Greens family. That's something else the state representative would like the legislature to address.

"When Steve was killed his family wasn't able to receive much in benefits from the Police Department, so we're also trying to look at ways of changing that.  If an officer is killed in the line of duty, how we can make sure that his family is taken care of once he passes away," Bracy said.

The MPD issued a statement on Sunday marking the date:

"Today, on the one year anniversary of the death of Mobile Police Officer Steven Green, the Department, as a whole, remembers our brother who paid the ultimate sacrifice while guarding the citizens of the city of Mobile, as he was sworn to do. Our thoughts are also with his wife, children and the rest of Steve's family."
