MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Hundreds of people across the area said their final farewells to a Mobile police officer killed while serving his community.

A procession more than 10 miles long led friends and family to the final resting place of Officer Steven Green.

Law enforcement officers lined the path leading to Officer Green's grave site.

The American flag was draped over his casket.

”This is the most spectacular event I’ve ever seen,” said Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams.

The service also gave the community a chance to say thank you.

Family members said they couldn't believe how the story of one man serving his community touched so many lives.

“It was surprising, you know? I didn't believe the whole city would come out and support, you know, the incident that happened like it did,” said Kipplin Green, a cousin of the fallen officer.

“Law enforcement and the citizens gathering together to show support; it is an amazing sight to see,” Williams said.

Green was honored with a 21-gun salute, while his relatives turned to each other during the service for strength and support.

“They held up together but the wife, you know, it's going to take strength from God to heal her over time,” said one woman who attended the service.

Police said it’s the same grief shared by local law enforcement and those who worked with Officer Green.

"We are indeed one big family. And we believe in supporting each other, and this is just a way of support,” Williams said.

The ceremony ended with the release of three white doves.

Family and friends said Officer Green was a hero and will be missed.
