MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Many are mourning the loss of Mobile Police Officer Steven D. Green, including those that remember him in his youth.

Alabama State Representative Napoleon Bracy Jr., said he has lost a brother.

"I was able to see him in the hospital, I actually walked in and touched him on his arm and prayed for him," said Bracy, who represents Alabama Congressional District 98.

Bracy said he and Steven Green were neighbors and best friends.

He said Green always wanted to be a police officer.

"It's horrible what happened to him, you know; but he died a hero. He died doing what he loves and what he believed in and what he always wanted to do," Bracy said.

Green graduated from Blount high school in 1995 where he played varsity football under former Blount high head coach Ben Harris.

"He was a quiet, hard working young man, and it just saddens me. When I saw his picture, I said, ‘Oh that's Steven Green, I know him. I used to give a ride home.  He played for me. He was a good kid, great student,’" Harris said.

Harris said Green always gave his all.

"He always did what you asked him to do. It just saddens me," Harris said.

Bracy has a lot of good memories of growing up with Green.

Bracy credits green for keeping him out of trouble.

"Steve had a level head. We weren't the best kids by far, but we did pretty good," Bracy said. "I'm proud of him, little Steve and his daughters should be proud of him. Their dad died a hero."

His last conversation with Green was on New Year's Eve.

Representative Bracy is working on drafting legislation to ban blade-like neck charms in Alabama.
