One killed at TK Stainless USA

CALVERT, Ala. (WALA) - Update: National Steel City has released the name of the contractor- 53-year-old Michael Wilson from Flowery Branch, Ga.

A spokesman with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, said the agency opened an investigation into a fatality at a ThyssenKrup construction site.

Officials said Wilson died Tuesday working at the ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA construction site in Calvert.

Wilson was a contractor who worked for National Steel City, based in Plymouth, Michigan.

An OSHA compliance officer on-site to see if any OSHA standards were violated.

The OSHA spokesman said the investigation could take anywhere from a few weeks to up to six months.

After it's complete, OSHA will release a report and, if ThyssenKrupp violated any OSHA policies, the company will be cited and fined.

OSHA's investigation into another TK fatality in November is also ongoing at this time but Michael Wald, an OSHA spokesman, said they are unsure whether the two are related.

Wald said, "Each inspection is done independently, but we'll certainly be looking to see if there's any common traits between the two fatalities."

Last November, officials said a crane operator died at a TK work site.

In a statement released by National Steel City, the contractor working with TK at the site, the company's CEO Bob Dunn said they have a policy of not commenting on ongoing investigations.

Dunn cited the company's outstanding safety record and said they are saddened by the loss of one of their employees.

"Our sincere condolences and sympathies are with his family, friends and co-workers during this very difficult time," he said.

A ThyssenKrupp spokesperson said the company is not releasing the name of the employee because of the ongoing investigation.

In addition to OSHA, local agencies are investigating the incident.
