GRAND BAY, Ala. (WALA) - Thanksgiving is meant to be a chance to bring the family together for a big feast but, for many, that's too much of a burden.
Sadly, there are many — some who look like you and I — who go hungry this time of year.
That’s where the Tri-Coastal Community outreach, a local volunteer group dedicated to giving meals to folks who otherwise may not have them comes in.
On Thursday, Tri-Coastal Community outreach handed out Thanksgiving meals to more than a hundred local needy families.
"It helps a great deal. Without it, I wouldn't be able to make it through the month,” said one recipient.
Volunteers have collected donated goods over the past few weeks and spent days assembling the meals.
The Executive Director of the Tri-Coastal Community Outreach, Carolyn Thompson, said, "It is worth it because their faces… It says it all."
Thompson said these needy families have enough stress to deal with, but this gift takes some of that stress away… If just for one day.
"If it wouldn't be for people like this, a lot of times you wouldn't have enough to get by,” said another recipient.
Thanks to the kindness of strangers, these folks who rely on the Tri-Coastal Outreach can have a happy Thanksgiving.
Tri-Coastal outreach also has an annual Christmas toy drive during which needy children are selected to take part.
