MOBILE, Ala. - More than 70 cats were left abandoned and to starve to death in a west Mobile trailer. Now those felines need a new home.

Brown cats. Black cats. Siamese cats. Whatever type of cat, there's a good chance there was one residing in the trailer on 118 Green Park Drive.

"Nothing could prepare me for what I saw," said Debbie Simmons, Vice President of the Azalea City Cat Coalition, a non-profit organization. "I've seen shows on Animal Planet about SPCA who go into abandoned trailers and see animal cruelty, but I never thought I'd see it myself."

The cats were abandoned for at least a week. It could've been even longer if a neighbor didn't take action.

"The windows of the trailer are painted except for one pane and she saw a couple faces in the window," explained Simmons. "I think when she approached the trailer, she smelled and maybe looked through the other windows and saw all the cats inside."

What was inside, was insane. The trailer and yard reeked of feces. Even worse, animal body parts lay on the trailer floor.

"There was some evidence of cannibalism among the cats," said veterinarian Dr. Mark Colicchio. "I assume that's how they sustained themselves. I estimate it was several weeks in this condition."

"What was so surprising is as bad a condition as those living arrangements are, the cats were actually in pretty good shape," added Simmons.

The cats that could not be saved were put down. Now the others now need a home.

"We need volunteers that would be willing to house or foster some of these cats that need a place to live until we can find permanent homes for them," said Simmons.

The owners of the trailer park are trying to locate the former resident, but have not been successful.
