MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - As the Municipal Park Football League celebrates it’s 40 th anniversary darkness hangs over the field, literally.

The city of Mobile removed the lights at the park two seasons ago.

Mike Chambers, the athletic director for Municipal Park Football said the city deemed the lights dangerous but has recently said that if they raise money for it, they’ll put them back.

“They’re telling us $180,000 to $200,000 to put up eight light poles and lights,” Chambers said.

The group started their fundraising Saturday with a football camp. Chambers says 165 children participated in the camp and that he’s grateful to all the volunteers, including five high school football coaches, who donated their time to the camp.

“It’s a start,” he said. “We have to start somewhere.”
