MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe winning songwriter Paul Williams will make his third return to Mobile as the guest of honor at the Drug Education Council ’s annual fundraising luncheon on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Mobile Convention Center. The doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon beginning at noon. FOX10 News anchor Bob Grip will once again serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
Williams is the author of classic pop hits including “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “You and Me Against the World,” “An Old Fashioned Love Song” “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” and “Let Me Be The One”. His songs have been recorded by such diverse musical icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, David Bowie, Ray Charles, R.E.M., Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross and Kermit the Frog.
He is also the focus of a 2011 documentary called Paul Williams Still Alive .
As a part of America’s large recovering community, Paul is also very active on the Speakers Circuit. Sharing stories of his own escape from addiction, he quips, "You know you’re an alcoholic when you misplace a decade." Sober for 21 years, his humorous observations of life, love and creativity are augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor.
