MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile police are tracking down the man who they allege put a child's life in danger Wednesday morning. Authorities claim after eluding police, the suspect abandoned the car and the baby.
"One of our patrol officers initiated a traffic stop. The driver, instead of stopping drove to a residence in the 6400 block of Barker Drive. The subject, the driver actually bailed out of the car and took off on foot," Ashley Rains with the Mobile Police Department said.
Authorities allege the driver ran away, leaving a child in the car.
“The officer noticed there was a child in the car, and the car was rolling toward the fence. The child was actually not restrained in the vehicle,” Rains said.
Witnesses claim the car rammed into this fence, and it damage to the fence and car. But, witnesses tell FOX10 the baby appears to be fine.
"It's dangerous. He should have had the baby buckled up; he should have stopped," Neighbor Sidney Daily said.
Neighbors said they were concerned about the child's welfare during the ordeal.
Police said they believe the home was the suspect's intended destination.
"It ended up being the residence where the car was stopped was the child's mother. So the child was uninjured and turned over to his mother,” Rains said.
The mother has declined to comment.
As for the suspect, police said they have not made an arrest yet.
"The investigation is ongoing as to who the driver was and charges are pending,” Rains said.
Police said the driver will face charges of reckless endangerment, as well as several traffic violations.
