Police patrol Mardi Gras in full force

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mardi Gras reveler is something Mobile Police Department Cpl. Sonny McCoy knows all about. After almost 30 years of service, McCoy said he is policing his final parades.

"I've been on this corner probably around 15-17 years, on this one corner. And everybody that has come down here, I've made friends with,” McCoy said.

Like McCoy, dozens of officers are in downtown Mobile making sure revelers have a safe and fun Fat Tuesday. Mobile police said if you need help, an officer will be pretty easy to find.

"We are at most corners inside the parade route. It's pretty difficult to go to a corner without finding an officer somewhere. We do have a command set-up at Government and Cedar,” said Mobile Police Department Cpl. Chris Levy.

Police are patrolling the downtown area in full force.

"We are looking for underage drinking. Not jumping the barricades. You know, just enforcing the laws that are in place. And making sure that people come down here and have fun,” said Levy.

Meantime if you want to bump into a true Mardi Gras veteran, Cpl. McCoy stands at his post at Church and Claiborne.

“I just love doing this,” said McCoy.
