Police release new information on alleged beating

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Police have released to FOX10 News new information about the case involving a man allegedly beaten over the weekend.

Cpl. Chris Levy said their investigation shows the incident stems from an ongoing dispute between the victim and a suspect yet to be named.

Police also wanted to release that no one has confirmed that this attack was “in retaliation for Trayvon Martin,” as one witness reported.

The attack happened on Saturday, April 21 in the evening on Delmar Drive in Mobile.

Police confirmed to FOX10 News on Monday that an attack happened and that the victim, Matthew Owens, was in critical condition at a local hospital. Police say they have not been able to question the victim due to his condition.

As of Monday, a description of the suspect and/or suspects had not been released. Police say the incident started because Owens was “getting onto" some kids from the neighborhood who were playing basketball and playing in the street.

Police say the kids apparently went back and told someone that Owens was getting onto them, and that’s when an unknown number of individuals came after the victim.

Neighbors and Owens’ sister say a mob came after Owens. One neighbor claimed that it was men, women, and children.

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones cautioned the public Tuesday not to jump to conclusions in the beating of Mobile resident Matthew Owen and to wait until the investigation reveals the facts.

“Police will certainly explore a racial motive if the evidence supports it,” the mayor said. “This type of mob violence will not be tolerated. If people think we are going to tolerate that to bring attention to some national event, they are sorely mistaken. They will be arrested and prosecuted for assault or whatever the appropriate charge may be."

At last check, Owens was listed in serious condition. FOX10 News is staying on top of this story, and will continue to follow-up with Mobile Police as details unfold.
