Prichard officials outline storm plan

PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) - UPDATE August 29, 3 p.m.: As of 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29, operations at the City of Prichard have resumed.  City Hall will open at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Mayor Ron Davis and the Prichard City Council voted Monday to postpone Tuesday’s municipal election in light of the possible ill-effects the city will feel due to Tropical Storm/Hurricane Isaac.

Officials said this was done to ensure the safety of citizens and the fairness of the election for those citizens who choose to evacuate in light of Alabama Governor Robert Bentley’s evacuation orders.

The council also authorized the closure of City Hall for Tuesday and Wednesday, August 28-29, with the exception of emergency personnel.

Prichard officials said they will also release of funds for emergency disaster relief, if needed.

The council also voted to enact a curfew on Tuesday.

If the weather deteriorates as expected on Tuesday afternoon, the curfew will start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and will continue to 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The Mayor and council would like to urge citizens to stay off the streets during the storm.

Officials said there are many low-lying and flood-prone areas within the City of Prichard.

City leaders are urging citizens to consider finding a safer place to stay if your home generally floods during a hard rain or thunderstorm.
