Puppy thrown from third floor balcony

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - South Alabama Spay and Neuter said a puppy is in critical condition after residents at Barrington Apartments say it was thrown 15 feet from a third floor balcony.

Barrington Apartment Manager Scott Kimbler said a group of people saw someone throw the puppy from a balcony.

Kimbler said he found the dog in a grassy area outside the apartments.

"When I came outside, I saw eight residents trying to get the puppy,” said Kimbler.

He said the owner of the dog was inside the apartment when she threw the puppy.

The apartment manager claims the owner was fighting with her roommate when she tossed the dog outside. He said it fell three stories, landing in a grassy area nearly 15 feet away from the apartment. 

"I was heartbroken. I couldn't believe anyone would do that,” Kimbler said.

Neighbors said they worked together to get the puppy to the vet for treatment.

"My big thing was if there was any chance the spine might be injured, I didn't want to move her,” said Michael Tremba.

They took the puppy to South Alabama Spay and Neuter Clinic around 1 p.m. where it’s receiving treatment for its injuries.

"The x-rays have shown there no broken bones, but congestion,” said vet tech Stephanie Williamson.

As for the dog's owner, she is no longer allowed on the apartment’s property.

"I worked with the roommate, and we had her removed from the lease agreement. So as of midnight tonight, if she is anywhere on the property, she can be arrested,” said Kimbler.

But some said that's not enough.

"It’s so often we get a call about animal cruelty, and it seems nothing happens. These animals aren't treated right, and it doesn't seem the punishment fits the crime," Williamson said.

Kimbler said the roommate is pressing charges against the owner of the dog. 

Mobile Police responded to the call. They said if any charges are issued, it will be handled by Mobile Animal Control.

The puppy will be at South Alabama Spay and Neuter for the next 24 to 48 hours.
