MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Police said the question of exactly how Officer Steven Green was killed still remains.

Lawrence Wallace, Jr. made good on his threat of not going to jail when he stabbed Officer Steven Green in the sally port at Mobile Metro Jail.

After taking off in the squad car with Green's gun and leading law enforcement on a chase, Wallace was ultimately shot and killed during a standoff. Countless bullet casings were strewn across the scene.

"We will present that to the Grand Jury to make sure all proper procedures were followed. By all accounts, it appears to be justified; but we want to make sure we present a thorough investigation to the grand jury," Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich said.

Rich is trying to gather all the details. She said the autopsies have not been completed, and it may be months before the results are released.

"As a standard part of an autopsy, they do a toxicology report to determine if there were any drugs or alcohol in anyone's system," she said.

While being taken to a police car, Wallace was seen taunting, acting out and bragging.

Wallace once claimed in court that he was a jewelry design major at Bishop State. It's been speculated that he armed himself with the sharp edged medallion seen around his neck.

Monday, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran told FOX10 News he doesn't believe the medallion was used as a weapon. We also learned another fact.

"He was wearing the medallion when he was shot and killed,” Rich said.

After seeing videotape of the attack, Rich is unsure what the Wallace used as a weapon.

"As of right now it has not been determined where he gained access to the weapon,” Rich said.

While authorities continue to figure out how, the community wants to know why.

During the manhunt for Wallace, Mobile Police Officer Mark Johnson was wounded. A bullet struck his arm. He was treated and released from USA Medical Center.
