MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Police responded to a homicide on Sumner Drive early Saturday, October 20. They’re still looking for who shot the man and why.

Police said 67-year-old Phillip Wright was found dead just before 7 a.m. from an apparent gunshot wound.

“I heard gun shots, bam bam and saw a bunch of police over here. I heard about three (that) sounded like a shotgun,” said Colby Simons.

Mobile Fire-Rescue pronounced Wright dead at the scene.

“When I first looked out my door and opened the window, I saw his body laying there on the ground, covered up. They were just taking pictures of his body, finger printing his truck and just taking pictures of everything,” said a resident.

We're told Wright was a security guard in the RV Taylor Community and police said he was on-duty at the time of the shooting.

“I’m wondering who did it, why, and why and why would they sit there and do something like that to him? I feel like security guards need more stuff for safety. I think they need guns to help them if something else happens like that,” a resident said.

Investigators aren’t releasing many details about the crime. Right now, they’re asking the public’s for help.

We’re told a vigil will be held for Wright Thursday night from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. at Cathedral Square.

If you have information on this case call Mobile Crime Stoppers at 251-208-7000.
