Reaction to TSA changes varies

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Transportation Security Administration is revising its list of items allowed through security check points and onto airplanes.

Beginning later next month, the TSA said some current banned items, like small pocket knives, will be allowed. 

FOX10 News wanted to know what you thought about the changes.

Air travel security has been strict since the 9-11 attacks.  The TSA placed limits on a number of items and even went so far as to limit the amount of liquids a passenger can carry.

“I like the fact that they are really thorough about why you can and can't take on a plane,” said Maya Constantine, who said she is an avid international traveler.

Starting April 25, the TSA will begin to relax some of its limits. It plans to allow airline passengers to carry-on some items currently deemed unsafe.

“I still don't understand why they don't let you bring on any toothpaste or liquid, though,” said Drew Johnson, outside the Mobile Regional Airport post office location.

The TSA will soon allow small pocket knives with non-locking blades shorter than 2.36-inches and no wider than a half-an-inch.

“My days of flying are over, since I found this out,” said Angela Lindelof.

“Taking knives and stuff like that would kind of freak me out,” said Constantine.

“Honesty, it seems a little crazy to me,” said Roman Scott, of Pensacola.

The TSA said passengers will also be allowed to carry on certain types of sporting equipment that has been banned in the passed.

Pool cues will be allowed.

“They could break them in half and stick somebody. It's dangerous,” said Lindelof.

Ski poles will be allowed, too.

 “I doubt I'd bring the ski poles onto the plane,” said Johnson.

As will two golf clubs, a Lacrosse stick, hockey stick, and baseball bats less than 24-inches long.

“And bats, what do you need that for,” said Constantine.

“What I can't understand is how they're going to allow knives, but if you got shampoo that's over 3.5 you can't bring that on,” said Scott.

TSA officials said the reason for the change is to align its rules with International Civil Aviation Organization standards and to allow security officers to focus their efforts on finding higher threat items, such as explosives.
