MOBILE, Ala. (WALA ) - A Mobile recycler has been criticized by some residents for cancelling a free service. He spoke to the Mobile City Council Tuesday, Jan. 22 to clarify his business operation.
Service changes involving recycling have led to some complaints and confusion in west Mobile.
Those concerns mounted and became the talk of a recent council meeting.
Mayor Sam Jones and Councilman John Williams extended an invitation to Greenie in a Bottle's owner K.D. Johnson.
“I love Mobile. It’s my city. It made me who I am today,” Johnson said.
He responded to Williams’ statement from the last council meeting that waste management companies should pick up recycling.
“To suggest trash companies handle recycling is like asking a bicycle company to build airplanes,” said Johnson.
Johnson explained why the free paper collection was over.
“Newark got out of the free paper collection because it was cost prohibitive. They lost money,” said Johnson.
He had some bad news for people with Newark labeled bins.
“For participants who no longer wish to participate, yet still have containers, you'll be charged for those containers,” said Johnson.
Johnson's speech raised more questions than answers.
“Now what? We're still in a predicament where our citizens being held somewhat hostage,” said Williams.
Johnson would not go on camera following the meeting, but Williams offered some advice.
"I will tell the residents of District 4 to please, before you pay money or before you give your container to someone, contact our office and we will verify the information that you've been given and try to help you to do what's right,” said Williams.
Curbside recycling is not managed by the City of Mobile, there are currently several private companies offering pick up service throughout the city.
