MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Patrick Smith is being charged as an adult in a carjacking that led to a fiery crash at a Saraland gas station.
Police said one of his accomplices was killed, and FOX10 News learned Smith will not face additional charges for the other suspect's death.
Police said the 17-year-old is being charged as an adult.
Authorities said on Tuesday, Smith and two other suspects carjacked two trucks on Laurel Drive.
Officers said Smith and 25-year-old Leroy Anderson were riding together in one of the stolen vehicles when officers spotted them.
A high speed chase soon followed into Saraland, where the investigators said Anderson lost control of the truck, flipped and collided into a gas pump.
Anderson later died from his injuries, and Smith was arrested.
Smith also faces charges for a robbery and shooting last month. The Mobile Police Department said Smith has a criminal history.
But the district attorney's office said Smith will not face additional charges in connection to Anderson's death.
FOX10 News went to Smith’s home on Clement Street and met a relative.
"He’s a good kid, very smart. You know, things happen. People make mistakes,” said the anonymous relative.
The Mobile County Public School system said Smith is not listed as a student in any of their schools.
While Smith is behind bars, his family is taking this hard.
"All we can do is pray. Hope everything comes out for the best,” said the relative.
The relative said he has a message for Smith. He said, "I would tell him his family love him, and we hope he come home soon."
Smith is being held on no bond, and his arraignment has been set for Wednesday, Jan. 16.
Police said a third person connected to the Laurel Drive carjacking is still on the loose and a truck is still missing.
Investigators are following up on tips.
