SATSUMA, Ala. (WALA) - The Satsuma School System appoints an interim superintendent.

Joe Walters will take over Monday and school board members say has a busy summer ahead of him.

The school year may be winding down, but things are just getting started in Satsuma.
Come Monday, Joe Walters will take over as interim superintendent.

Board member James Woosley said Walters has some work to do.

"He's got to go through all the hiring for administration, principals, teachers, faculty and staff. Everybody is going to be very busy with that. Finalizing curriculum, enrollment, setting up budget," said Woosley.

Walters was one of eight candidates who applied for the position.

He served as the superintendent for the Tuscumbia School System in north Alabama until December when his contract was not renewed.

School Board officials said they reviewed that and aren't concerned.

Woosley said Walters is a good fit.

"Combination of things. We needed someone who could do the stand up for a new school system and someone who could lay the groundwork to last for a long period of time. Experience and background connection he had won us over," said Woosley.

There will be more than 1,000 students in the Satsuma School System.

School officials expect that number to grow, and they are accepting applications for people who live outside the district.

Right now, there is no middle school in Satsuma. Board President Linda Robbins said one will be in place by the fall.

The deadline is Friday.
