GRAND BAY, Ala. (WALA) - Someone fired a pellet gun at a Mobile county school bus as it carried students home, and shattered a window.

School officials said on Monday afternoon, Oct. 22, a school bus carrying middle and high school students was driving along Highway 188 near Fernland Road in Grand Bay when, suddenly, a window shattered.

It’s a story FOX10 News learned about from a viewer through ReportIt@Fox10tv.com.

Mobile County Public Schools Transportation Director Pat Mitchell said, "The individual that shot the window out of the bus used a pellet gun."

Mitchell said the window was rolled down; the outer window was shattered, but the inner window was untouched. Officials said it has since been repaired.

No one was injured, but Mitchell admits it could've been worse. School resource officers are investigating the incident.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says pellet guns can be dangerous.

The group says about four people a year are killed by these weapons.

"We’re just fortunate to know that no one was injured as a result of this reckless behavior,” said Mitchell.

The Mobile County Sheriff's office says in an incident like this, the suspect could be charged with a felony and, if a student were injured, the suspect could also be charged with assault.
