MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - A search for two missing jet-skiers came to a tragic end early Tuesday morning.
The bodies of two young men were recovered from Dog River eight hours after they had fallen into the water.
On Monday night, emergency crews searched high and low and from every angle, frantically searching for two young men.
Robert Goldthwaite heard it all night.
"I heard all the helicopters, and I heard 'em keep going up and down the river,” he said. “I was down here earlier in the day, and this place was loaded with boats and whatever. So I figured this is where something had happened."
Mobile police got the call at around 8 p.m. Monday night- 24-year-old Christopher Williams and 20-year-old Montrell Marks fell off of a jet ski while enjoying Labor Day in Dog River.
Mobile police spokesperson Ashley Rains said, "For some reason, the jet ski overturned, and threw both of the riders off of it."
Police said the two young men were not wearing life vests.
"Their swimming skills may not have been advanced,” said Rains.
Police said the two men drowned and their bodies were recovered at 4 a,m. Tuesday.
Goldthwaite said, "Anytime you take a life, it’s sad, especially at that (young) age. When you get to be my age, you kind of expect it, but they've never had a chance to really live."
Mobile police warn boaters that regardless of your swimming abilities, you should always have a life vest.
Police said the case is still under investigation.
