MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile Rowdies, a select soccer team from Mobile United Soccer Club, has been invited to play at the Disney National Championship in August.

This talented group of boys range in age from 7 to 9, but compete against 10 and 11 year olds. This qualified the Mobile Rowdies for the tournament.

The kids are very excited about the possibility of playing on such a grand scale said team leaders.

“Their first love is soccer and they, and their families, have fully committed themselves to the sport. Unfortunately, the sport of soccer does not have real support in the Mobile area, and so the team travels to various cities to compete,” said Pat Pendleton, Coach for the Mobile Rowdies.

Finding out it qualified for Disney happened so fast, the team is now raising money to pay for the trip of a lifetime.

“It is nice to see how other cities have embraced the sport and competing against that competition helps our boys become stronger players. There are several individuals who are doing good things in soccer in Mobile but the city and county have a way to go. Our goal is to develop quality players, quality kids, and develop the sport of soccer in Mobile,” said Pendleton.

Wednesday, July 18 Cold Snap on Old Shell Road across from the University of South Alabama, is holding a fundraiser for the team.

Ten percent of all sales between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will go towards the team and help pay for the trip to nationals.
