Settlement reached in 2011 bus crash

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - FOX10 News has been following a case out of civil court involving St. Luke's Episcopal School. The suit alleged the school was negligent, and that one of its former students suffered permanent injuries; but the case won't be heard by a grand jury.

An agreement was reached between St. Luke's Episcopal School and the family of a former student.

According to a joint statement from school Chancellor Richard Gaal and the attorneys for the family Andy Citrin and Robert Hedge, "The parties are pleased to announce that the family and the school have been able to reach a confidential resolution."

The case began with the accident that happened in May 2011. Manohar Rajan was with other students at a track meet in Birmingham. After 14 hours at the meet, the bus carrying the student athletes started its journey home.

While on I-65, the bus ran off the road allegedly because the coach, who was driving, fell asleep. According to the traffic report, the bus flipped on its side and skidded down the interstate.

According to the report, Rajan was taken to a local hospital. Rajan suffered extensive knee injuries and had to undergo five surgeries. According to his attorneys, doctors urged him not to play sports or run again.

Neither party was able to comment beyond the joint statement due to the agreement of the settlement. Rajan no longer attends St. Luke's School.

The coach who was driving the bus was also named in the suit.
