Shooting surveillance turned over to DA

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - FOX10 News is continuing to follow this weekend's police-involved shooting death of a freshman at the University of South Alabama.

Campus police said 18-year-old Gilbert Collar was naked and charged an officer early Saturday morning. The officer fired into his chest, killing him.

Details were scant on Monday because of the federal holiday, but here's the latest that we know.

Surveillance video of the incident has been turned over to the Mobile County District Attorney's office, and that office has now launched an investigation.

This story all started with a bang on a police department window.

A USA officer responded to a loud banging when he spotted a naked man outside.

It was 18-year-old Gilbert Collar of Wetumpka.

University spokesman Keith Ayers said, "The man repeatedly rushed and verbally challenged the officer

in a fighting stance. The officer with weapon drawn ordered the individual to halt. The officer retreated numerous times in an attempt to calm the situation."

The university said after he ignored the officer’s repeated warnings, Collar was shot once in the chest.

"The individual fell to the ground, but he got up once more and continued to challenge the officer further before collapsing and expiring,” Ayers said.

Campus police have requested the DA's office to conduct an investigation, and the Mobile County Sheriff's office will assist.

The officer is on paid administrative leave and at this point he has not been identified.

Jere Beasley said he has been hired by the Collar family to investigate the shooting. Beasley released the following statement:

“Our firm has been retained to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Gil Collar, a student at the University of South Alabama. The family is leaving all media contacts relating to this matter to us. They have lost an 18-year-old son, are grieving and would like to have their privacy. Hopefully, the officials at the University will cooperate with us during this difficult time for the Collar family. Gil was a freshman at the school and his family had been assured by campus police back in August that a safe haven would be provided for all new students coming to the University. The University should not attempt to defend this incident by releasing information to the media until such time as a complete investigation is done. There are some issues that deal with rules and regulations covering incidents of this sort that must be addressed. When our investigation is completed, a decision will then be made by the family concerning their course of action.”

After its investigation, the District Attorney's office will presents its findings to a grand jury.

Monday is a federal holiday and its fall break on campus, so there wasn't much information available.

The school president and the police chief were unavailable for comment as well.

District Attorney Ashley Rich will address this incident on Tuesday.
