At least six injured in traffic accident in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ala. (WALA) - A car accident Sunday afternoon at Lott Road and County Road 63 in Georgetown sent several children and one adult to local hospitals.

The Georgetown Volunteer Fire department arrived quickly and got right to work. They say two vehicles collided leaving at least six people, including children, injured.

Craig Lindgren and his family were celebrating his mother's 86th birthday at their home when a loud crash sent them running outside.

“My brother Steve and some other folks ran out to help, right away bringing towels. We knew it was bad because it was so loud,” said Lindgren.

Lindgren said he was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, describing to them the scene in front of him. He said there were at least five children ranging in age from infancy to six years. Lindgren says the children were bleeding and crying for help.

Stephanie Grider said her husband was driving the other vehicle, but he refused medical attention.

One vehicle's driver was trapped behind the steering wheel.

“The patient was extracted successfully within a few minutes. Life Flight was called but was unable to fly because of the weather conditions,” said Tim Blake with the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department

Lindgren said, a few years ago, another driver wrecked at the same spot.

“You know, it's a dangerous intersection… We knew this was coming someday. It needs a red light blinking or a yellow light blinking. I know money's tight, but had that been here, maybe that wouldn't have happened,” said Lindgren.

Lindgren didn't know how Sunday's accident happened, but the quick response from authorities and the community inspired him.

“Well, the world's a mess— it's not a mess, it's getting better — if you were here today, you'd see that,” said Lindgren.

FOX10 contacted the Alabama Department of Public Safety for an update on the victims, but hadn’t heard from them in time for broadcast.
