Snapper season could be extended

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - With the 2012 snapper fishing season being the shortest on record, it seems a little unfair that mother nature hasn't been cooperative over the last couple of weeks.

Recent heavy rains and Tropical Storm Debby had many sitting looking at their reels wondering if this season would be a total bust. Director of Marine Resources Chris Blankenship says not if he can help it.

Blankenship says Alabama and other states have been maintaining numbers, such as the number of days that haven't been favorable for fishing. They've given that number to the National Marine Fisheries Service who has the final say about the season.

Blankenship says the conversations he has had have been favorable to the season being extended. He says an announcement on the decision is actually expected Friday or Monday.
