MOBILE,Ala. (WALA) - The Board of Directors of South Alabama CARES said they were recently made aware of an issue regarding possible financial irregularities within the organization.

In a statement , the Board of Directors wrote:

"The Board has begun an investigation of the situation. Remedial action may be taken depending on the results of the investigation," the statement noted.

When we asked for more information and an on-camera interview, an employee provided a board members phone number. Our messages have not been returned.

We did, however, get a hold of their 2009-2010 tax information. It shows the organization spent more than they brought in that year.

The tax document shows the total revenue was 583,923, and total expenses were 608,661.

Salaries, compensation and employee benefits that year were reported at 398,905.

The IRS form for 2009 shows the organization ran a deficit for the first time in the past three years.

South Alabama CARES provides support, assistance, education, and advocacy for people affected by HIV and AIDS and to provide HIV prevention education and awareness to the community of Southwest Alabama.
