MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A Mobile man has been arrested after police said he allegedly hurt his own child, and the little one is not even a year old.

Deshonne Staten has been charged with willful abuse of a child, involving his 5-month-old.

"What we determined is that the mother left the child in the care of the father, and she left and went to the store. When she returned home, she found the child had injuries to the face," said Cpl. Chris Levy.

Levy said the mother then took the child to USA Children's and Women's Hospital.

"We spoke to the child's mother and our suspect about the injuries and determined he actually caused the injuries to the child," said Levy.

Levy said there were no cuts or broken bones, but that the infant's face was swollen. Levy said, adding to it, the father compounded his problem.

"The suspect actually gave us a false name while we were investigating, and it was found he had several warrants," Levy said.

Along with abuse of a child, Staten was charged five other traffic charges.

Police said the infant is expected to be o.k. The investigation is ongoing.
