MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Four men accused of killing a Theodore man and his grandson in 2011 appeared before a judge on Jan. 10. Their indictments were amended.
Tavares Jones, Bryant Reynolds, Ricky Turner, and Timothy Taylor face multiple capital charges including an additional charge that was read to them in court.
"We just presented the case to the grand jury, and we cleaned up the indictments a little bit and added one count of capital murder of a committing a murder and killing someone under the age of 14," said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.
The four were already indicted but the district attorney felt the need to push the charges even more.
"We've alleged from the beginning that they burglarized the home, broke in the door, came in and shot the 12-year-old then shot the grandfather," Rich said.
Investigators said Willie Sullivan and his grandson, 12-year-old Glenn Sullivan were asleep when some of the suspects entered the residence on Old Military Road. Investigators said Glenn Sullivan was on the couch when he was shot to death. Willie Sullivan was awakened by the noise, investigators said, and was able to fire a few shots at the suspects before he was killed.
The four suspects will be tried separately. Tavares Jones' trial is set to start in February. However, his attorney Jason Darley said he might be seeking a delay.
"This is a voluminous case. There's a lot of information to it. Everything has to be processed and we have a chance to review evidence the prosecution has provided," Darley said.
Darley said he might have his client undergo a mental health evaluation. along with being charged with murdering someone under the age of 14, the suspects are also charged with murder during a robbery, murder during a burglary, and killing multiple victims.
Willie Sullivan Senior was the father of a Mobile police officer. Glenn Sullivan was that officer's nephew. All four suspects in this case have pleaded not-guilty.
