MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Trayon Washington waived his right to appear in court, so his attorney, Art Powell, entered a not-guilty plea for the 17-year-old.
Powell spoke to Fox10 after the hearing and said he has been able to talk with his client, and both are ready to hear the evidence from the state at the preliminary hearing.
Washington's mom was also in Judge George Hardesty's courtroom and had a statement afterward.
"My sympathies go out to the family, I'm heartbroken about the whole situation. My son didn't do it," said Washington's mother.
Washington's mother did not want to be put on camera saying she feared retaliation.
Washington is the only person who has been arrested for the murder of Wendy Fisher. Police said Fisher was outside her home when she yelled at the vehicle in which Washington was riding, asking it to slow down. Police said an argument followed and shortly after, shots were fired.
The three other people in the vehicle have been questioned by police, but not charged.
Washington remains in Metro jail under no bond. The preliminary hearing for Washington has been set for August 13.
