Tornado destroys Sweet Pilgram Baptist Chruch

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -  Members of Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church said they are in shock after the Christmas Day tornado blew through the building.

Deacon Willard Mccaskey was on sight Wednesday assessing the damage. There is now a gaping whole in the front of the church.

"Blew straight through,” said Mccaskey.

The back is almost a mirror image. Mccaskey says the church is looking at a rebuild rather than just a repair.

"With the water and wetness the ceiling fell down in the sanctuary,” said Mccaskey.

Now the congregation is without a church but Mccaskey’s spirit isn’t broken.

"I never questioned God. I know that if he allowed it to happen so there’s a solution for it. We just have to see that,” said Mccaskey.

The church will push forward.

"Thank God it’s just a building. The church itself is in us. It’s just a building,” said Mccaskey.

The church is looking for a new building to use while its facilities are repaired.
