MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - People were arriving bright and early Friday morning at the Mobile Convention Center. Fans lined up for the chance to meet their favorite bowl players, and some future NFL stars. Thousands showed up for that special opportunity, but many went home disappointed. At least three players were not able to come, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
There were frowns, and a few tears shed. The announcement came moments after the Senior Bowl experience got underway. Tim Tebow was not going to make it.
"Because he's probably in the hospital," said one very young fan.
Senior Bowl officials said Tebow was not in the hospital but was held back from the event by the medical staff. Tommy Maher said he is disappointed but knew something could go wrong.
"Before we came over we knew there was a chance, he's already been taken to the hospital twice for fever and maybe strep throat," Maher said.
Brooke Jackson had a situation all her own.
"Two crying babies because Tim Tebow didn't show up." said Jackson.
Both Jackson and Maher along with their families, all stood in line for more than nine hours. A very long time for an autograph. Though there was disappointment, there was still plenty of love for Tim.
"I hope he's better, I hope he's well enough to play tomorrow," said Jackson.
"We hope he's well, we're praying for him to be well," Maher added.
Along with Tebow, former Alabama players Colin Peek and Roy Upchurch were also withheld due to medical reasons.
