Teen arrested on gun charge

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Police recently announced a new initiative aimed at curbing gun violence and illegal drugs. It is called operation "I.M.P.A.C.T." which stands for Integrated Municipal Police Anti-Crime Team.

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones said guns and drugs are two big problems when it comes to juvenile crime.

Need proof? Less than six hours after the news conference, 17-year-old Ivan Walker was arrested for shooting at a car.

"Our arrested subject approached a vehicle, pointed a gun at the victim, and when the victim drove off, shots were fired and hit the car,” said Cpl. Chris Levy with the Mobile Police Department. "This happened on July 6, so it is a problem that we have known about for sometime."

The shooting happened at the corner of Palm and Shell Streets, just blocks from Walker's home.

FOX10 News went looking for answers on where the teenager may have gotten the gun, but no one answered.

Mayor Jones addressed the issue Wednesday.

"Most of the teen crime that we've seen in our area is all gun related. They can't buy guns from a pawn shop or gun store by state law. They're buying them somewhere from somebody an we've got to remove that from our community," said Jones.

Walker is just one of the teens arrested in July 2012 and charged with a gun crime.

The others include 17-year-old Trayon Washington, who police said gunned down Wendy Fisher in broad daylight in front of her own home.

Seventeen-year-old Nakia McQueen was also charged with assault and shooting into a car.

Police said its all evident operation I.M.P.A.C.T. is needed.

"It does drive home the need of the I.M.P.A.C.T. program and that we are not taking it lightly," said Levy.

Operation I.M.P.A.C.T. will combine several departments to combat gun and drug violence.
