MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - It's official, Herman Thomas' hat is in the ring to be the next State Senator for District 33. The announcement was made Wednesday on the steps of Thomas' church, St. James Major Church, in Prichard. Thomas said he recognizes the importance of giving back to the community and he feels he can make the biggest contribution at the state level, so he's running for Senator.

Back in a bow tie, Herman Thomas wants back in public life. With dozens of supporters at his side, including his defense attorneys, the former judge announced he'll seek a State Senate seat.

"It should come as no surprise, that I wish to continue to serve my community, and I am running for the next State Senator for District 33," said Thomas.

That puts Thomas against Senator Vivian Davis Figures, who currently holds the seat. Thomas said he called Figures to let her know his plans to run, but he had to leave a message.

Senator Figures, released a statement, saying: "Right now I am totally focused on the challenges before me in this legislative session. The citizens of District 33 have put their faith and trust in me for nearly 14 years. The unprecedented and overwhelming issues facing the Legislature this year deserve and require nothing less than my full attention."

Thomas was tight lipped about his criminal trial where he was acquitted of sexually abusing inmates and paddling them. But he did indicate he'll talk to FOX10 News soon.

"I'll be contacting TV stations in the next week and will be happy to have sit down interview as it relates to the trial. We are working out the details now," said Thomas.

Thomas doesn't think the trial will have an impact on his chances of getting elected.

"Make no mistake, the last few years have been a struggle for me and my family, but I'm not going nowhere," he added.

Supporters behind him clapped.

Thomas said he plans to focus on juvenile crime, drugs and community involvement . His supporters believe he'll make a good Senator for various reasons.

"Because he's my brother, now that's all I've got to say to you," shared Thomas' sister.

"He's a great guy, he was found innocent and you are not the judge, so vote for him," said Gwen Williams. "He is the best thing we got in this community."

Thomas refused to talk about his work to get his law license back. He said he will call TV stations in the next week to schedule sit down interviews to talk about the trial, and getting his license back.
