MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - UPDATE: 12:22 p.m. During a news conference at Mobile Police Headquarters Monday morning, Police Chief Tyrone Williams said the four suspects in the Kyser Miree murder case were riding around looking for someone to rob on April 16.
The chief did not say why the group targeted Miree's home on Macy Place around 11:30 that night.
The information from the chief is the most detailed account of the crime released publicly by police during the four-month long investigation.
Update: All four suspects wanted in connection to the April 16, 2010 murder of Kyser Miree are in custody. All are expected to be charged with capital murder.
A big break in the murder case of Kyser Miree. Four suspects have been arrested.
The investigation has been going on for months, leaving some wondering if anything would ever come of it. But as the sun came up on Sunday, the time had come for questions to be answered.
The first arrest in connection with the death of Kyser Miree came around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Twenty-year-old Jamal Lang was taken into custody.
"The detectives began the investigation and what they were able to determine was that Jamal Lang and 3 other suspects were committing a robbery when Kyser was shot," said Officer Chris Levy with the Mobile Police Department.
Not one, but four suspects. All facing capital murder charges.
"Police are checking other locations for the suspects," said Levy after Lang had been arrested.
An active search continued for Michael Lee, Ernest Wiggins, and Bo Taylor. A few hours later the second arrest was made.
"Around 6 a.m. we arrested Michael Lee. He was arrested at his residence," Levy said.
Sunday night, the third suspect surrendered. Bo Taylor turned himself in to Mobile Police around 7:30 p.m.
Then early Monday morning, the last suspect, 19-year-old Ernest Wiggins, turned himself in to police.
Mobile Police aren't releasing too many details about what happened the night of April 16. They said the suspects did not know Miree personally and it seems it was a random robbery attempt.
The family of Kyser Miree has been waiting on this kind of break for months.
"We got the call around 3:45 a.m. It was great news, we were glad to have the call," said Ben Miree, Kyser's father.
Ben Miree said the call came as a surprise, but it didn't matter the time of day. Finding out that there had been arrests in connection with his son's death was worth it. He said there are more than just feelings of relief.
"It just confirms that somebody took Kyser from us in a botched robbery attempt just because they wanted to get whatever modest amount of money he may have had," said Miree.
As senseless as Kyser's death may be, the Miree family remains strong. Ben Miree said they haven't decided whether or not they will come to Mobile for any of the court dates.
"I hope they'll get justice from the law whatever that is. If they want grace or forgiveness, they need to talk to the Lord about that," Miree said.
Ben Miree said although this will not bring Kyser back, it is a step in the healing process for his family.
