MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Three Republicans have thrown in their hats in the race for the state Senate District 35 seat, which covers part of Mobile County.

The Alabama Republican Party says, state Rep. Jim Barton, business consultant Bill Hightower and retired Marine Col. Nick Matranga filed paperwork to run. The Alabama Democratic Party says, no candidates from the party submitted the proper paperwork by Thursday's deadline.

The primary election is set for Jan. 29, with a runoff March 12, if needed.

Senate District 35 covers part of the city of Mobile and stretches south to Dauphin Island. It became open when Republican Ben Brooks resigned to become a circuit judge.
