Cdr: Heroin possibly making 'comeback'

Two arrested for trafficking heroin

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said an undercover drug investigation landed two people in jail for trafficking heroin.

Deputies arrested Victor Lavelle Currie and Christee Lee Mitchell after investigators seized 32.8 grams of what they believe to be Mexican Brown Heroin from a home in Laurie Court in west Mobile.

“It was still compressed and compacted,” said the Commander of the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, who asked to remain unnamed. “It was large chunks, almost cubes and it's obvious it was broken off a much larger object.”

The commander said state and local Intel led them to the pair, where undercover officers witnessed numerous sales.

He said Mobile County does not currently have a big problem with heroin, but he believes the highly addictive drug is making a comeback.

“Mobile had a terrible problem with heroin at one time back in the 70s,” he said. “We don't want to go back there again.”

The Commander says law enforcement intelligence shows the drugs are coming from Northern Alabama and cities including Pensacola.

He said his department is taking pro-active measures to keep the drugs out of Mobile County.

The Heroin blocks seized in west Mobile are estimated at $14,000, but could possibly be worth more depending on cut and purity.

Undercover deputies said the investigation is ongoing and they expect to make additional arrests.

MCSO Spokeswoman Lori Myles said both Currie and Mitchell will face a mandatory sentence of 25 years if convicted.
