Two confess to more than 100 burglaries

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Two men who may have committed more than 100 burglaries in Mobile County have been arrested.

"It still made me paranoid, I feel violated. I can't believe someone would do that to other people,” Faye Mallette said.

Now, Mallette isn't taking any more chances. She makes it a practice to always lock her doors after becoming a crime victim.

Deputies said more than 30 cars were burglarized in The Copeland Island and Windy Oaks subdivisions. Unlocked doors were the target. Investigators said the suspects would just walk the neighborhood, open the door and snatch whatever they could and take off. They were looking for electronics and money.

"They did use credit cards, so it was just a matter of time before we were on their trail," Mobile County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lori Myles said.

Authorities said through tips and leads they identified Wesley Whitney and Kyle Kendrick as the suspects.

They were spotted near Three Notch and Schillinger roads.

“Once we pulled them over, there were stolen items in the vehicle. We were able to trace those items back to other vehicle burglaries we had. When we searched one man's home, we found items stolen from last year,” Myles said. “There was a stolen rifle that was found in one of the young man’s home that's related to a case from the Mobile Police Department."

Myles said the pair confessed to stealing items from more than 100 vehicles in 2011 and they apparently made money off the whole operation.

"They were really selling word of mouth, ‘Hey I got an iPod, an iPad,’" she said.

"That's wonderful they caught them. That’s great," neighbor Dave Press said.

Concerned residents are feeling a little relief, and learned a lesson in protecting their valuables.

"Since that happened I make it a total practice to lock it," Mallette said.

Whitney and Kendrick are charged with five counts each of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle. More charges are expected.
