USA Day of Service celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - University of South Alabama faculty and students worked on a number of service projects in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 21.

Crews worked on a porch and roof at a home on Union Street, which was damaged by the Christmas Day tornado.

Jodi Wood, a music instructor at USA, brought her children to join in on the experience.

"They get to see the different situations that people are in and how they can help, even if it's something small like picking up leaves,” said Wood.

Her daughter, 13-year-old Anna Wood, said she enjoys celebrating King's legacy.

"He helped people and I think we should help people too and follow in his footsteps,” said Anna Wood.

Students also gathered at Dumas Wesley Community Center to volunteer their services. Alicia Manzie, a senior at Springhill College, was there along with her sisters of Iota Nu City-Wide Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

“He was someone that was all about service and serving his community and that is something our sisterhood is founded on. Scholarship, sisterhood and service,” said Manzie.
