MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile Baykeeper is partnering with the Mobile Housing Board and Renaissance Corridor residents this Saturday, March 23 to clean areas surrounding the Three Mile Creek Watershed.
Volunteers should meet at 500 Morgan Street and the work will last from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
This community volunteer event is an excellent way for Mobile Baykeeper to partner with local residents to reduce trash and prevent other stormwater pollution from entering Three Mile Creek and, ultimately, Mobile Bay.
In addition to being an eyesore, when trash and other pollution enters the water, it negatively impacts water quality. Three Mile Creek has been deemed an impaired waterway, which means it does not meet minimum water quality standards.
Mobile Baykeeper is also working with the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, Dewberry, Inc. and other organizations through the city of the development of a Watershed Management Plan for Three Mile Creek.
Alabama Department of Natural Resources, Keep Mobile Beautiful and the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program are additional partners in this cleanup effort and are providing all cleanup materials.
In addition, the City of Mobile is providing trash trailers and large trash pickup, and Firestone Tire Company has volunteered to pick up tires on Saturday.
Mobile Gas is providing hot dogs for lunch after the cleanup.
