DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WALA) - A lot of people in Dauphin Island didn't let a road closing Monday stop them from having a good Labor Day.

The west end of Bienville Boulevard at Rafael Semmes Court remains closed while crews work to get sand off the road that was left there by Hurricane Isaac.

But, dozens of people enjoyed the public beach Monday.

One of them was Kay McKenna of Pascagoula. She's the principal of Resurrection High School there.

McKenna said she evacuated when Isaac started approaching.

She said,  "A lot of people did. A lot of families did. I did, and, then, because of the flooding, a lot of people moved out."

McKenna said she knew people who were hurt in the storm, and, she said, "It's a close knit community."

Many other people on the beach Monday live in nearby cities.

We talked to people from Birmingham and Sylacauga, Alabama, who said they weren't going to let Isaac's effects ruin their trip to Dauphin Island.

Others were from Mobile enjoying a day off.

Chip Rives of Mobile said he works for Davidson Fuels.

As for getting the day off, Rives said, "I guess we didn't have much to haul."
